Long Version

The Inaugural Concert of Chamber Music Amici, the first resident company of the Richard E. Wildish Community Theater in Springfield , will take place at 7:30 pm, Monday, June 1. On the program will be W. A. Mozart’s oboe quartet, Robert Schumann’s piano quintet, and Francis Poulenc’s sonata for oboe and piano. This concert introduces all five core musicians: Pilar Bradshaw, violin; Amy Goeser Kolb, oboe; Steven Pologe, cello; Sharon Schuman, violin; and Victor Steinhardt, piano. Also playing will be guest musician Fritz Gearhart, viola. After the performance the audience will join the musicians on stage for desserts from Excelsior Inn and Restaurant.

With the motto, “Creating community through great music,” the mission of Chamber Music Amici is to produce excellent, affordable chamber music concerts which are fun for all ages. In collaboration with public schools in Springfield and Eugene , the ensemble also aims to promote the development of a new generation of chamber music lovers. To that end young musicians will perform in the lobby before the concert, and students throughout Springfield and Eugene will have access to vouchers for fifty steeply discounted $5 student tickets. The ensemble is also performing at Harris Elementary School in Eugene , Friday, May 29, noon to 2:40 pm, and at Cascade Manor Saturday, May 30, at 1:00 pm. Artistic Director Sharon Schuman will perform with music composition students of Springfield ’s Arts and Academics Academy in their year-end concert at the Wildish Theater on June 2.

The opening of the Wildish Community Theater in 2006, with its near-perfect acoustics and affordable prices, made Chamber Music Amici possible. That year Sharon Schuman was among the first classical musicians to perform in the theater. After a sold-out performance of Dvorak’s “American” string quartet in a Chamber Music and Chocolate performance of Oregon Mozart Players, the audience streamed on stage to praise the acoustics in every part of the hall. This response led the core musicians to imagine forming a resident company to perform chamber music there. The Board of Directors of the Wildish Theater agreed to this proposal in early 2009, and Chamber Music Amici was born.

Its five core musicians are well known locally. Victor Steinhardt, a frequent concerto soloist with local orchestras, is also a composer and pianist with Trio Pacifica. Sharon Schuman, Assistant Concertmaster of the Eugene Opera Orchestra and former Concertmaster of Oregon Mozart Players, plays also with the Oregon Bach Festival and the Eugene Symphony. Steven Pologe, cellist for the Oregon String Quartet and Trio Pacifica, has performed as Principal Cellist of the Oregon Bach Festival. Amy Goeser Kolb, oboist for the Oregon Wind Quintet, is a member of the Eugene Opera Orchestra and performs also with the Eugene Symphony, the Oregon Mozart Players, and the Oregon Symphony. Pilar Bradshaw, Concertmaster of the Central Lutheran Chamber Orchestra, plays in the Oregon Bach Festival orchestra and in the master class string quartet for Helmuth Rilling.

In the midst of the current economic crisis, with arts organizations across the nation on the verge of collapse, it may seem foolhardy to embark on this new project. The members of Chamber Music Amici see things differently. There is currently no local professional organization with chamber music as its focus, yet there is a great appetite for chamber music. The group is committed to keeping ticket prices low, so that in these difficult times it can give audiences something to smile about. Civic leaders in Springfield agree. Chamber Music Amici has gained the enthusiastic support of the City of Springfield , Springfield Public Schools , the Springfield Utility Board, and Willamalane Parks and Recreation, which together make up Team Springfield, the Inaugural Concert Sponsor. The Wildish family will be the concert sponsor for the first concert of the first full season, Oct. 12, 2009.

Chamber Music Amici is taking careful measures to plan for long-term survival. Thanks to a part-time staff and the modest fees charged by the Wildish Theater, its budget is small. Thanks to community support and a dedicated board, the group is well on its way toward meeting its first fundraising goals.

After the June 1 Inaugural Concert, the ensemble will offer a full season of five concerts in 2009-2010, in which the core musicians will be joined by ten guest musicians from the community and beyond. Bach Festival Principal Clarinetist Michael Anderson and ESO Concertmaster Kathryn Lucktenberg will join the core musicians on October 12, 2009. The “Love” concert on February 22, 2010, will feature soprano Elizabeth Racheva, wife of the Eugene Symphony’s new maestro, Danail Rachev. Tickets for June 1 are available at the Hult Center Box Office, 682-5000.
